On a personal level, Laira and Anneka have no love for one another. This stems from a profound difference in world views, but also from the fact that Laira is Gnaeus Ferlae's great love of his life and Anneka, Gnaeus's wife, knows this.

Laira is a demigod who sacrificed her immortality for a mortal's life as the wife and queen of Silas Incanto, the ruler of Elaris.

Anneka is the eldest surviving child of a dictator, and would've been Empress of Elaris's greatest enemy if women were allowed to reign. She betrayed her home country of Veraesia for Elaris, where she is treated as a political prisoner. Whether she did so willingly or as the result of abduction by the Elarian military (specifically, Gnaeus Ferlae) depends on which country one lives in. Either way, Veraesia is prepared to wage a full-scale invasion to get her back.

Laira regards Anneka as a ruthless, calculating traitor loyal to no one but herself, who will manipulate anyone to achieve her goals.

Anneka considers Laira a sentimental fool who will follow her heart to ruin and bring an Empire down with her.

But both women know that a war between two Empires hinges on appearances, so to prevent a massive loss of life and shattering of their respective homelands, they're prepared to present a unified front.
